Born in Solo, Indonesia, November 12, 1952, graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia with an Ir. (Engineer) degree in 1979, continued his studies at The City University, London, the United Kingdom in 1983 and got a Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) degree in the field of Water Engineering in 1987. He pursued a Post-Doctoral Program at the University of Iowa, the United States of America in 1989/1990, as well as Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s Integrated Sediment-related Disaster Management Project in Japan in 1999. Some of the positions he held were as Secretary to the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (1994-1999), Manager of the Master Program of Water Resources Management (1999-2001), and Manager of the Master Program in Natural Disaster (2001-2002), Head of the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (2002-2018), Indonesian Executive Committee of the Asia Pacific Division (APD) of International Association of Hydraulic Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) in (2012-2014). He has been serving as a Professor in Civil Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada since 2005 till present, as a Chief Editor of Journal of the Civil Engineering Forum (2014-2017), Coordinator of the Multimodal Sediment Disaster Network (MSD-Network) membered by Taiwan, Japan, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, and Indonesia (2010-present), a Sub-group Leader of the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREP) project for a 5-year project titled Integrated Study on Mitigation of Multimodal Disaster Caused by Ejection of Volcanic Products in Indonesia, cooperation between JICA of Indonesia and Japan Science and Technology (JST) of Japan (2014–2019). During the last two decades (since 2001 till present) he has been conducting various research related to water and sediment disaster management. He is currently the Head of the Indonesian Association of Hydraulic Engineers (HATHI), Yogyakarta Special Region Branch.
